Eric rested his guitar on his right leg, looking behind him at the rest of his band. The Starbucks had specifically told Eric to not rock out too loud, lest they disturb the beatnik wannabes drinking foam-coated coffee and waiting for the next Colbie Callait to steal their brains for a few hours... and Eric wasn't very happy about it. Acoustic was the order of the day. He sighed, pushing his plastic nerd glasses up the bridge of his nose.
"Well, all right, everybody," Eric told the mingling coffee-drinkers. "We're the Square Deal... my name's Eric Beauford, I sing lead and I play this piece of crap guitar, and the bass player and official page turner with the tattoo on his neck is Mattias Rieschterfal. Behind me is our awesome drummer Jonathan Waters-Price, and the dude with the nice guitar is Trent Donovan. We'll be just jamming for a while, feel free to request your favorite coffee-house tunes... we know just about every song that's been released in the past two years that wasn't sung by an American Idol reject."
"Dude, don't piss off the Archuela fangirls," Mattias whispered in Eric's ear, brushing some of his long black bangs out of his eyeliner-coated eyes.
Eric ignored Mattias and strummed a little. "So, for your listening enjoyment, here's a little something first sung by Jim Croce... called 'These Dreams'."
Eric nodded to Trent, who nodded to Mattias, who nodded to Jonathan. Within seconds a slow, melancholy beat enveloped the coffee shop.
"Once we were lovers," Eric sang in his emo-esque whine, "but somehow things have changed... now we're two lonely people trying to forget each other's name...
Now we're two lonely people trying to forget each other's name...
"What came between us?
Maybe we were just too young to know.
Now and then I feel the same...
But sometimes at night I think I hear you calling my name,
Mmm-mmm-mm, these dreams...
Keep me going these days."
